What is Courage of the Soul?
Courage of the Soul (COS) is an independent LLC providing Pastoral Counseling services. COS was started by T. Luke Morgan in 2022. With 32 years of parish ministry and 10 years of Hospice service, Luke felt an overwhelming desire to offer, at an affordable rate, the transformative type of counseling that changed the trajectory of his own life.
COS is a safe and collaborative environment where the “why’s” behind our masks and the pain we carry from our wounds can be met with curiosity and compassion.
Courage of the Soul is a blend of pastoral (scripture-based) counseling and psychotherapy, focused on
compassionately exploring ourselves.

The Why?
Why the Lion with a Scar?
I grew up hearing my dad tell the story of him running through the neighbor’s field and catching his leg on the barbed wire fence. The cut was significant and deep. He tried to hide the wound from his parents, yet it became infected. Embarrassed and fearful of consequences, my father finally told his mother and showed her the infected wound.
She said, “Douglas, you can’t live with an open wound, but you can live with a scar.” She hugged him and began the process of mending the wound.
The truth is, we all have attempted to hide our open wounds, embarrassed and fearful of the consequences…
Courage of the Soul…
Learning to have compassion and even curiosity for what is hidden behind our own pain and struggles. Ironically, it becomes our source of strength when we pause, turn and face the dragons, from whom we spend our life running. The lion with the scar is a sobering reminder of our ability to survive life’s deepest wounds.

Luke’s Story in His Own Words...
Born in 1972, I was the youngest of five kids with three brothers and one sister, in the coal mine hills of West Virginia. My family survived on the (low) income of a pastor’s salary. My parents were very creative at making ends meet with early memories helping my mom with powdered milk, government cheese, eggs, etc. Dad was faithful in his assignments that came every 4 years, moving on to the next church, always uncertain of what “the next parsonage” and school would be.
My first marriage began in 1998 which came with the blessing of 5 biological children. In 2014, I went through a painful divorce after sixteen years of marriage. In my pain, I pursued a second marriage that was incompatible with the many broken places in my own soul. The second divorce only added to the shame and guilt I secretly carried.
It was at this point that I finally chose to be still. Clinical psychotherapy became my path for healing, empowering me to dig into my story, religious heritage, family history, personal drivers, and growing edges (blind spots). By facing my own hurts and brokenness, I realized some wounds came from the choices of others. Yet, most of mine were self-inflicted from my own misguided understanding of myself and the expectations I imposed onto others. I learned how to take the time and space to honestly learn who I was while embracing the reality that I will always be a “work in progress.” Finding the courage in my own soul (hence the name) has given me three things: Freedom (from blame, shame, and guilt), the drive to continue life’s journey as a “work in progress,” and the desire to help others experience healing for their souls.
It takes guts to make changes in our lives. Changes that are deliberate and no longer self-destructive and self-deprecating. Everyday I choose to embrace the process of courageous vulnerability, learning from my “old self” as I choose to be a better, healthier Luke. This new path has included some beautiful and unexpected blessings, a marriage to my wife, Faith, and two adopted daughters. This new family dynamic continues to offer great rewards and opportunities for growth. 😅

Experience
With more than 30 years of combined ministry, hospice service, and training experience, Luke has worn many hats. Besides being a fourth-generation pastor’s kid, Luke attended Lee College in Cleveland, TN, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Pastoral Ministries, followed by a Master’s Degree in Christian Formation. After more than two decades working in various pastor roles, Luke transitioned to working as a hospice chaplain. Eventually, becoming double board-certified as a Clinical Chaplain and Pastoral Counselor.
In 2022, after ten years serving families in hospice care, Luke embarked on a new kind of customized counseling service from which was born The Courage of the Soul, LLC. (COS). Luke is bi-vocational, owning COS, and is active in chaplaincy in Calhoun, GA.
